Teamwork and dental hygiene

It takes a team of people to keep your teeth in great condition. Some of that team is right here at The Dental Surgery Burnham in Burnham, but the most important team member is you, at home.

You look after your teeth every day, and you also make sure to get to your bi-annual check-ups here at The Dental Surgery Burnham. Our dentists may recommend that you come more often if they think your teeth need it.

Daily maintenance

What you do between check-ups determines to a great extent the results of the next check-up. Your major role is a twice daily hygiene routine to keep teeth clean and free from plaque and gum disease. You do this by carefully cleaning and flossing your teeth at least twice a day, using a soft-bristled brush, fluoride toothpaste, dental floss and maybe also interdental brushes.

If you can stop plaque building up, it is less likely to develop into hard tartar. Tartar is another step closer to tooth decay and gum disease. Cleaning and flossing get rid of food trapped between the teeth, which can also lead to decay.

At the dentist

After your check-up with the dentist, our hygienist will clean and polish your teeth.

Our hygienist is Danielle Cains. She has been through two years of training to earn a diploma in dental hygiene. Danielle is also a dental therapist, which means she is trained to provide primary dental care. This includes scaling and polishing teeth, using dental local anaesthesia, applying topical medicaments, taking dental x-rays, applying fissure sealants and giving oral health advice.

Danielle will remove any plaque or tartar that you have not been able to reach, and polish your teeth using pastes. If it has been a long time since you had your teeth cleaned and polished, you may need a double appointment. Also, if you are a smoker, it may take longer to get rid of the tobacco stains.

How to brush your teeth

Danielle loves teaching people the best techniques to get their teeth really clean, so please do ask for a quick lesson if you think your brushing could be better.
