When most people think about ways to improve their smiles, they worry mostly about the front 6-8 teeth. These are known as the social 6 because they are the teeth that are most on show when we smile and talk.

But what about when we laugh or yawn? Then the teeth most on show are the chewing surfaces of our molars. How do yours look? Are they even rows of white, or are they even rows of white with dark grey, glinty metal centres? If it is the latter then you’ve got amalgam fillings. Amalgam has been very popular as a filling material, and is available on the NHS. It is cost effective and easy to use, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t look great. It is a constant reminder that, once upon a time, you ate too many sweets or raisins or drank too many fizzy drinks or juices.

Are white fillings a good alternative?

Yes, they are. Modern white fillings are much stronger than the first ones that came onto the market about 30 years ago. They are made of composite resin, which is a mixture of glass and plastic.

The resin goes in as a paste, one layer at a time. Each layer is cured with a UV light, which hardens it and bonds it to the insides of the cavity, so there is no room for bacteria to sneak in and cause more decay.
