We are proud to have been providing dental crowns & veneers in Burnham since 1977, as our multi-generational family dentist has been a cornerstone of our local community. Over recent decades, we have focused on delivering the highest level of preventative and cosmetic treatments, rather than the general dentistry of the past. A large part of this has been the adopting of a philosophy that sees cosmetic dentistry not as an additional or an optional extra to general dentistry, but a progression to a higher standard of healthcare which ought to be available to the largest number of people.
How we perform crowning and veneering
The start of almost every one of our patients journey through treatment is a standard dental check up. This is where any issues that our patient may wish to bring up, or our dentist has observed, can be discussed along with possible treatment options.
It is a multi-session treatment, as time is required to fabricate the prosthetic, whether that be a full tooth in the case of a crown or a thin polymer porcelain layer in the case of our veneers. When a typical set of veneers is being fitted, the patient will have control over which side of the enamel that they wish their new veneers to be placed. In the case of crowning or a single veneer, our dentists will carry out a colour matching reading using a colorimeter to measure the exact shade of your natural enamel, along with its translucency, in order that the final prosthetic matches seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
Both crowns & veneers in Burnham are considered destructive, as a portion of the tooth has to be removed for the prosthetic to be fitted. In the case of crowning, the tooth is usually in particularly bad shape if the crown was necessary after any cavities. So, before we can fit you with a crown, we will need to ensure that the tooth is in good enough shape for this process to be successful in the long term.
When installing a veneer, a thin layer of enamel at the front of the tooth is removed in order to provide space for the veneer. The front surface of the tooth is abraded to provide a rough textured layer of enamel for adhesives to strongly hold the veneer in place.
Lifespan and maintenance
Veneers are considered to have a lifespan of approximately 5 years, provided that they’re well taken care of. The most common issue with veneers is the debonding from the tooth surface; in this event, it can often be reattached assuming it is undamaged. Crown in general have a longer lifespan of up to 15 years. Getting the most from both crowns and veneers only requires normal oral hygiene and regular 6-months dental check-ups to catch any potential issues early.
