What are the differences between veneers and crowns?

05/06/2020

Crowns and veneers in Burnham are methods used to improve the function and appearance of your teeth. Whilst both are used for dental restoration, they serve different purposes and are therefore, not the same. Crowns and veneers in Burnham both provide an artificial covering for teeth that have become damaged, discoloured, or worn down. However, they differ in how much they cover the original tooth. Crowns and veneers in Burnham do work in similar ways, but that is not to say both are appropriate for you. Always seek advice from a dentist at The Dental Surgery Burnham to know which is the best solution for you.

What are crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped covers that are placed over teeth to improve their appearance and restore their strength, shape and size. Crowns are necessary if you have a tooth (or teeth) that is weak from decay, has been cracked, or is severely worn down. They are also used to support a large filling, to secure a dental bridge, to hide a dental implant or to cover extremely discoloured or misshapen teeth.

What are veneers?

Veneers are extremely thin pieces of porcelain that are used to re-create the illusion of natural teeth, whilst supporting and strengthening enamel. They are always custom-made to fit the natural contour of your teeth and are then attached to the tooth’s natural enamel during a course of procedures. Veneers are usually recommended for people with teeth that are chipped, stained or have large gaps.

Which is better?

It’s exceedingly difficult to compare veneers and crowns because they have very different purposes. Whilst crowns are traditionally used to replace teeth with significant damage, veneers are often used for cosmetic purposes. The length of time both traditionally last depends largely on the materials used, the condition of your existing teeth and your level of oral hygiene. Both can last for as many as 30 years if cared for sufficiently, but crowns tend to be more permanent and don’t need to be removed for cleaning.

What are the main differences?

The most important thing your dentist will consider when determining if crowns or veneers are appropriate for you, is the condition of our existing teeth. Crowns are a preferable option for people who have extensively damaged the surface of their teeth and need them to be restored and enforced, whereas veneers are more of a cosmetic enhancement. Veneers can greatly improve your smile, but if you opt for this procedure when crowns would have been more appropriate, it could lead to veneer failure. Similarly, if your main goal is to brighten your smile and your teeth are in good condition, options for crowns would require removing a lot of the original tooth which would be unnecessary and ill-advised.

How much do they cost?

Crowns and veneers at The Dental Surgery Burnham both have a price tag, but a dentist would need to examine you to determine how many crowns or veneers were needed, which would alter the price. However, rest assured, we have payment plans available to help you manage the cost of your treatment.
