When brushing is no longer enough

Are your teeth collecting stains that your diligent brushing routine can no longer get rid of? Have you tried having a deep clean with the hygienist here at The Dental Surgery Burnham in Burnham, and all to no avail?

If that’s the case, then it sounds like it’s time to get tooth whitening treatment to sort out the problem.

The thing is that we have pores in our tooth enamel and these can become clogged with the traces of various foods and drinks such as red wine, coffee, tea, tobacco and more. Because the pigments are trapped in pores within the enamel, toothbrushes, even the hygienist, cannot get at them to remove them. What you need is hydrogen peroxide, which is the active ingredient in tooth whitening gels.

Hydrogen peroxide is a well-known, safe way to remove colour from hair and clothes and also to clean out wounds. It is a water molecule with an extra oxygen atom. When it comes into contact with your teeth it will bubble out the traces of pigment from the pores in your tooth enamel in the same way it bubbles out dirt from wounds.

Tooth whitening gels come in different strengths, so we have put together a way of whitening teeth that uses 2 different strengths of gel using the Enlighten system, which is the only system to guarantee a B1 shade of white, the whitest shade possible.

We start off by making sure whitening can help you. It won’t work on all kinds of discolouration. Then we make you a set of gel trays that fit exactly. We send you home with them and the lower strength gel to start the process. After you’ve been wearing the gel-filled trays for a short period every day for a fortnight, you come back to us for a good clean and a 40-minute session with the stronger gel.

After that, you are good to go. You can top up your treatment every now and then when it starts to fade simply by purchasing more whitening gel from us.

Whitening transforms teeth. Why not make it your dental project for 2019?
