Shiny new teeth

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of having lovely, shiny, plaque-free teeth. You know how it is, it’s month five since you last came for a check-up and clean and polish with us at the Dental Surgery Burnham. You know you need to get down here because when you run your tongue over the insides of your bottom front teeth, they feel a bit ridged and furry, and it’s hard to feel the grooves where your teeth meet. That’s plaque, it’s built up between your teeth and around your gum line. Now, even when you’ve just spent ages brushing your teeth, they don’t really feel clean.

You start to look forward to coming to see us, and fingers crossed, you’ll make it through the check-up with no problems and can get straight into the hygienist’s chair.

Danielle Cains is our dental hygienist. It’s her job to restore your teeth to things of great beauty by removing all the built-up plaque and tartar with a clean and polish in Burnham.

Plaque is the name for the sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth throughout the day. These bacteria live on the sugars in your mouth, which is why we often recommend brushing your teeth after every meal. If the plaque stays on your teeth for more than three days, it hardens into tartar, or calculus. This is rock-hard and the only way to get it off your teeth is to scrape it away. Sounds far worse than it is in terms of pain. Removing tartar is vitally important for the health of your teeth, because this is the stuff that really does the damage to your teeth and gums.

The bacteria give off acids that eat away at the enamel on your teeth and irritate your gums. Left to do this, the acids will create holes in your teeth in which decay forms. They also inflame the gums and cause them to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets in which food can become trapped and rot. These pockets also give the acids a passage to your jawbone and they start to eat away at that, loosening your teeth and causing them to fall out.
